Wikileaks has released some interesting documents from the security and global consultancy agency Stratfor, also known as America’s “CIA Shadow”.
Among these documents published today by DITA are some emails about Albania exchanged on January 21st of the murders of protesters, an analyst of this organization, called Marko Papic, who briefs Albania and Vice President Fred Burton.
A series of emails exchanged between them on January 21 with the question “what the hell is going on in Albania”
Papic reports that there are three dead and explains among others:
“Friend, this Berisha was president before the 1997 anarchy. He is the don (chief) of the Albanian mafia. Albania generally does not matter. However, it is a state where the government is one of many organized crime groups competing for power. Anarchy is always very close. ”
The following day, January 22, Papic informs his boss that the situation is calm.
The center requests information from Papic for Berisha’s influence in Kosovo and Macedonia.
Stratfor’s analyst writes:
“I am speaking in general, Berisha does not have much role in the region. He continues to be seen as a model of the old leader. Obviously, Kosovo will always need the support of the Albanian prime minister and his government. Yet many Kosovans remember that Berisha provided a vague support to the KLA and is believed to have benefited personally by allowing fuel loads in Serbia and Montenegro, despite an embargo at the time. Berisha is still seen as a man with close ties to Serbia – one of his closest contacts is DamirFazlic, a character who is thought to have contacts with the highest levels in the Serbian government. Berisha is not thought to have strong ties to Macedonia and to Djukanovic’s defeat, he has also limited influence in Montenegro. “
Asked about Rama, the analyst reports:
“Rama is known as a stubborn and somewhat radical among the international community in Tirana. It is not good in dialogue, creating situations where no party wins. Despite these weaknesses, Rama represents the “modern” leader that many Albanians have been hoping for since 1990. “
